It’s not easy to find good beer in Las Vegas BUT. ..

I gave it a good go!

First stop was Diablo’s. We ate there six years ago on our honeymoon so went back feeling nostalgic. I had nachos with salsa and hot chicken wings to start and a steak burrito for my main and went for a Dogfishhead 60 minute IPA with all of that. It was a perfect foil to all of that Mexican spiciness. It’s been a few years since I’ve had a Dogfishhead hopefully it won’t be as long again!

Today was the main reason for this visit to Vegas, Naomi (my wife’s niece )and Alex’s wedding. It seems like we visited a lot of the more scenic spots in the city  for photos before the wedding and it was after six when I had my first beer, definitely not your typical Irish wedding.   Anyway we all went to (The? ) Barrymore for our wedding breakfast. I ordered a Firestone Union Jack IPA. Much as I enjoy being Irish I will still drink a beer with a British flag on the label! It went very well with the pork belly I had as a starter.

My wife (the cider correspondent, remember? ) had an Angry Orchard hard cider. The waiter tried to tell us it was beer but how and ever, the cider correspondent dubbed it ‘really nice’ and refused to drink Bulmers/ Mageners later on in the evening.

Next I had a Stone Pale Ale. I encouraged some of the non craft beer drinkers to try it and they found it a little strong. That’ll be all of those hops! Mmmmmm….

Later in the evening we stopped in to Ri Ra in the Mandalay Bay. I don’t normally visit Irish bars abroad but there were some extenuating factors. I had a Fat Tire, which had been recommended to me. Sorry to say it didn’t really do it for me! Just a little bland for my taste.

Next we went to The Pub in the Monte Carlo which has an unbelievable selection of beer on draft. I tried one of their own Pale Ales. It wasn’t bad at all, could be a good choice if you were there for a long session.

I asked on the off chance if they had any of the Ommegang Game of Thrones beers. They’re kind of a holy grail for me being a combination of two things I really love. Pity he couldn’t sell it to me! He asked and they couldn’t arrange a price as it was sitting in the store room for about a year. So either I have strange taste in beer or Las Vegas and her visitors like to play it safe when it comes to beer.

Last beer of the night was Uinta dubhe. It’s a black IPA. It did have a caramel taste and smell but was a very nice and well balanced beer. Then they stopped serving and started dropping the shutters so we reckoned it was time for bed. Next stop Memphis!
