The Left Bank Bistro: Burgers & Beer

The Left Bank Bistro in Athlone has been a draw for foodies for about twenty years now. They’ve recently changed their lunch menu and widened their selection of Irish craft beers.  It would have been rude of me not to call in. I started out with the chicken wings and a Bo Bristle IPA.

I’ve written about the Bo Bristle IPA serval times before so suffice to say I like it a lot. It also was a great match for the spicy wings. Chicken wings are a simple enough concept, but very few places get them this right. They’re finger licking good to borrow a phrase.

The burger looked great on the Left Bank’s facebook page and it wasn’t a disappointment in the flesh. The ground beef was from Brideswell which is just outside Athlone and it was aged for twenty eight days. It was topped with some excellent smoked cheddar. There was also some slaw and onion marmalade. I had a bit of the blue cheese sauce left from the wings so I threw a bit of that on there as well. The only fault I could find was that I wouldn’t put the pickle on top of the bun. While it looked nice it slightly wet the bun. A great burger. I had Eight Degrees Barefoot Bohemian Pilsner with that. It’s not bad beer but I prefer their bolder efforts. If you’re going to try one of the burgers I would recommend Bo Bristle’s Amber Ale instead. The burger is also on the early bird menu so you really have no reason not to, unless of course you’re a vegetarian! So if you’re in Athlone stop at The Left Bank for a burger and a beer, tell them I sent ya!
