Brew Dog: IPA is Dead 2015

LITERALLY EVERYONE I KNOW was at the BrewDog AGM this weekend. Well okay,  Mr and Mrs Irish Beer Snob and Ian 11pm Somewhere were among the crowd anyway. So I had my own little BrewDog party at home.

I picked up this years batch of single hop brews in The Winehouse, Trim a few weeks ago. I popped open the Pioneer first, careful to leave a wee drop in the bottle. Pioneer is a surprisingly citrussy English hop. It’s not bad, but I am not crying about the fact that I probably won’t have another.

Mandarina Bavaria is one of my new favourite hops, it hails from Germany and it worked very well in Rascal’s Wunderbar where it was balanced by some of it’s noble cousin Hallertau. Here on it’s own it reminded me of something…

That’s it, and the orangey bit out of the middle of Jaffa Cakes!

Next up was Ella, made with an Australian hop that imparts a resinous piney flavour. Decent but not mind blowing.

Last but best, to my mind at least, came Chinook. This (relatively) modern American classic hop worked very well on it’s own. It’s nicely bitter and very drinkable.

Finally I poured a little of each beer into my glass, the symphony of hops was fantastic. BrewDog should start making a five pack, number five being the blend, also, it would leave room for a glass! Now, should everyone sign up to be ‘Equity Punks’? You’ll have to decide that for yourself. Sláinte!

Lovely review which contains my current attitude to alcoholic beverage: “It’s not bad, but I am not crying about the fact that I probably won’t have another”
