Beer in Munich

Myself and my family are just back from a few days in Munich. Those of you who  ‘like’ the Facebook page may have seen some but not all of these pictures already. Here’s what I got up to, with most of the palaces and castles and that sort of thing left out. On day one the Hirschgarten just happened to be sitting halfway between Schloss Nymphenberg and our hotel. So in we went and had a grand tea of grilled chicken, sausages, chips and apple juice. I went for a litre of Augustiner Edelstoff, when in Rome and all that!

Day two we started off with a visit to the last day of the Auer Dult. It’s not quite Oktoberfest but I picked up a mixed six pack of local beer from a brewery I hadn’t heard of.

After an afternoon in the Deutsches Museum I was approached by a gentleman of the road with an empty bottle of beer. I gave him one of mine and he apologised and gave it back to me, saying thanks but could he have two euro instead please as he only drank Augustiner Edelstoff, I laughed at the fussy fecker and gave him the couple of quid. Who says beggars can’t be choosers? The beer was Geisinger. The Kellerbier was pretty decent and malty. The Weisse was a bit flat but it may have got a battering in transit that knocked some of the fizz out of it and the Dunkel was pretty darn good.

That evening we went to the Augustiner Keller for dinner and I had a more sensible half litre of Edelstoff and one of the Weisse. It’s a lovely spot with a great atmosphere and the grub is hearty and reasonably priced.

The next day we were in Legoland, where I had an Autenrieder Weisse and pizza for the princely sum of a tenner. You wouldn’t get the like of it in Disneyland!

I’m going to skip ahead to our last day when we visited the Weisses Brauhaus for lunch. I had a delicous Schneider Weisse Tap 7 with some very tender Munich Style Ox.

I was happy to get to try the Aventinus Eisbock, it’s sweet, rich and at 12% ‘stronger than strong’ as described on the menu. Beautiful.

In this post I have mostly stuck with the more traditional breweries. In the next post I will tell you about a really cool ‘craft beer’ bar so stay tuned for that. Sláinte, or I suppose I should say Prost!

    Augustiner Edelstoff is definitely the gold standard. The Aventinus Eisbock looks great!
