Longford Summer Festival is on this weekend in the old barracks. At the last minute I decided to head over last night.  My lovely wife agreed to drive. It was my first time to try the new permanent addition to St. Mel’s core range; an IPA with a rather fetching pink label. It’s dry hopped with Chinook and Waimea. It’s 5.2% and very nicely balanced indeed. The piney crisp bite is offset by some sweet caramel maltiness. Good job lads. I can’t wait to see this everywhere!

After that I said I’d stick with the IPAs and went for Trouble Brewing’s Vietnow which is normally only available in the pub group that includes P. Macs and Cassidys and Colombia in Mullingar. So you’ll have to head round one of those to try it for yourself.

Then I cheekily nipped in behind the bar and Breffní of the O’Cleirigh’s allowed me to pull my own pint of their topically named Fuck Brexit, a 6.5% very limited edition IPA. I don’t include a whole lot of swearing or politics here but I wholeheartedly agree with this sentiment. Besides any of the other implications this decision will make the brewing game challenging here and across in the UK. The beer? It’s a wee hoppy beast. You may get over to Longford today though if you want to try it!

Keeping it controversial my last Beer of the night was another one from those mad O’Cleirighs; Chocy Ár Lá, if you don’t get it, I’m not going to explain it to you! This one is a real chocolate cake of a beer. It’s rich and thick, unlike the lads from Cavan. Beautiful, and a great way to finish the evening. If that sounds like it would float your boat, they are showing the match there right now on a big screen and Jerry Fish is on stage tonight. I’d say there’ll be a great atmosphere there this evening. Sláinte!
