Today (as I begin) is Offline Day, that means only using your phone for calls for a full twelve hours.
I did it, BUT it was a struggle. I found myself reaching for my phone and trying to pretend I was only checking the time. ( I wear a watch!) I was invited to take part by Carol Dekkers, who is a fellow beer blogger and many other things as well, she spent the day on the water in Florida. My day was rather more prosaic with having to complete an audit in work. My spouse found the whole thing very amusing, especially when I didn’t notice that the self enforced ban finished at 9pm.
Other than the compulsion to check my phone every 30 seconds what was different? No social media surfing while eating my lunch. Instead I read NME’s review of the new Spoon album. It sounds good to me!
Luckily I had this months Uncut cover mount cd which meant I could listen to a track from the album ‘Rent I Pay’, without having to wait to find it on the interweb. I also missed these photos my wife sent me:
I am glad I did it and I may do a digital detox again, as I obviously spend waaayy too much time online. I felt like I really earned this.
Simon – I love this post! Hopefully the next time we do (inter)national offline day, you can spend it with your loved ones instead of at work! Thanks so much for participating (and what an adorable daughter you have!)
Cheers, Carol
That’s two daughters, identical twins! 🙂 & we had a few hours together in the evening
