Last night the two Liam’s were in The Malt House at the Athlone Beer Club meet up. Liam Hanlon of St Mel’s fame had given Liam Tutty (soon to be ) of McGargles fame some Amalia hops, a different strain to those used in the St Mel’s Neomexicanus and Mr Tutty brewed an ale with them. Just to clear up any confusion, Liam Tutty is going to work for McGargles Digital Marketing, he is not taking Alex Lawes’ job!
The consensus on the beer was, not bad, but most found the finish quite astringent. When tasted side by side with the Neomexicanus you could detect similarities. An interesting experiment. Sean Colohan has his own interpretation in the works but we’llhave to wait a while to try that.
In other Athlone Beer Club news, Rob O’Rourke, hit the ripe old age of thirsty, I mean, thirty and his party just happened to coincide with our meet. Happy birthday Rob!
On the night we also supped Black Donkey’s Scythe and Kinnegar’s Crossroads. Both went down very well indeed.
I have to thank Liam Tutty/Seán Kelly aka the Crafty Hoor for the next two pictures!
…and that’s it for Athlone Beer Club in 2015, I think the highlight of the year was the trip to Banagher’s Bo Bristle where we brewed our own beer. Thanks to everyone who came along and joined in and thanks to everyone who has hosted us. More good times ahead in 2016! For now; sláinte!
