For our eighth anniversary my wife and I decided to dine together in The Fatted Calf. I had ate there myself during the summer when it had just opened in it’s current location in Athlone Town Centre. I started with the confit pork cheek which came with balsamic glazed puy lentils and bramley apple. I choose a Dungarvan Minehead Pale Ale to accompany my starter. The pork cheek was so tender and the lentils and apple complimented it well.
My wife had the the foie gras and black pudding terrine, I had a small taste and it was delicious.
We both had John Stone steaks for our main course, I had the tenderloin and my good lady had the fillet which was a special. We had handcut chips and spring onion mash as our sides. We were both very happy with our steaks. I had a Dungarvan Black Rock Stout with mine. I liked the beer goblets too, they were a little different.
For dessert I went for the chocolate and peanut butter Oreo tart, it was the perfect marriage of a few of my favourite foods! Speaking of perfect marriages (wink), my beloved wife went for the warm chocolate orange fondant, both desserts came with divine Cúlcow ice cream.
To finish I had a Crested Ten and the lady had a Bellini, it was the second best she’s had since Harry’s Bar in Venice ohhh, about eight years ago, but that’s high praise. I heartily recommend The Fatted Calf for your next meal out in Athlone. Sláinte!
The food looks delicious. Congrats on the anniversary!
It really was, cheers Mike!
Glad to hear!
