Back to Belgium

These Belgian lads certainly know their proverbial onions when it comes to brewing. St Bernardus Abt 12 isn’t from one of the half dozen trappist breweries but don’t let that stop you from trying it. The first thing that hits you is straight after you open it is the strong fruity smell. It’s sweet but not sickly. The taste is reminiscent of bananas, figs and dark brown sugar. It’s quite strong at 10.5% but with the medium carbonation it is easy to drink and not cough syrupy like some other strong beers. I have to say this is not the next best thing to a trappist beer, instead it is their equal. This fine beer is very much in demand in O’Brien’s Athlone at the moment!
