Funsize and Fruity

Fruit beers are very ‘on trend’ at the moment and they are a bit like marmite. Personally I think there is a place for them. That place is waiting for me in my fridge. Magic Rock’s Highwire is a well regarded Pale Ale so I thought their Grapefruit infused Pale Ale would be worth a shot. The obvious comparison is of course Brewdog’s Elvis Juice which is a Grapefruit IPA. This one clocks in 1% lower at 5.5% and I found it slightly sweeter with a bit of an oily mouthfeel. Nice and refreshing, perfect for a sunny afternoon outdoors.

Beavertown’s Yuzilla Phantom is an altogether more complex beast. It’s a Gøse style Beer which means that salt has been added, and this one features limes and Yuzu juice. Yuzu are an Asian citrus fruit. It’s an unusual combination of sweet, salty and tart flavours. I enjoyed the bubbles from the head which brought sherbert to mind, sadly that sensation was short lived as the head dissipated quickly. The beer that was left in my glass still tasted good though, having never knowingly eaten Yuzu fruit I don’t have anything to compare it to but it was delicious and had a lot of citrus flavour. Worth picking up to give your palate a bit of a workout. Sláinte!
