Trouble Brewing’s Special Brews

image

Trouble Brewing are not letting the grass grow under their feet at the moment, they’ve launched not one but four limited release beers!  I picked up three of them on my recent visit to Egan’s in Portlaoise. The Whistleblower IPA was the first victim of one of my bottle openers. The Australian Topaz and Galaxy hops really work fantastically well together, there is a bittersweet balance and some tropical fruit shining through. I didn’t take a picture of the beer but it’s the bottle with the gold writing above if you’re looking for it!

I mentioned the Big Bear Brown Ale before as I had it at the European Beer Bloggers Conference. It’s like an American take on a brown ale and it lives up to it’s name. They used English Phoenix hops in this one but I’m sticking with my American description!

The Agent Provocateur Red Rye has a very similar label to the Big Bear, so always read the label! The label notes suggest pairing it with chicken dishes. I had it with chicken and chorizo paella but I strongly suspect they had the more traditional roast chicken dinner in mind. No matter, it’s a nicely spicy beer that held my attention well.

I first had the Lazy Sunday Saison at Bloom in June, it also lives up to it’s name. It’s got some yeast and some dry bitterness and you could pretend you were sitting outside a pub in Belgium. The notes on the bottle suggest pairing with shellfish but I had fishcakes which were just as good. I hope these ‘limited releases’ stick around for a while!

One Belgian and one Belgian ‘style’ Beer

image

It may seem that there has been a lot of Irish beer featured here over the past week. I’m not going to apologise for that but here are a few ‘world’ beers for a slight change and I’ll be back to Irish beer tomorrow! First up is Woody Creek, a Belgian Style White from Flying Dog. It’s brewed with coriander and orange peel which is normal for this style. Would you like a slice of orange in your Blue Moon sir/madam? It’s very easy to drink but it’s not going down in history as my favourite Flying Dog beer.

It’s probably not fair of me to draw a comparison with Urthel’s Saisonniére. But holy fuck it’s good. Apparently it won a World Beer Award for Best European Seasonal Pale Ale. It’s got a great head and it’s really drinkable. Highly recommended.

St Mel’s, Longford & their first three beers

image

St Mel’s Brewing Company in Longford have began distribution of their first three beers, I heard that Murphy’s Law in Athlone had all three so I took my first chance to try them. Liam Hanlon the brewer has plenty of experience gleaned from his time with Carlow Brewing/O’Hara’s. The three they’ve decided to unleash first are a Helles Lager, a Brown Ale and a Pale Ale. I reckoned the best one to try first was the Helles. It’s very refreshing and it looks great. I can see this one tempting folk away from their regular macro lagers.

image

Next I got stuck into the Brown Ale. It’s very satisfying, kind of chewy malt and a little bit dry. Which of course makes you want more!

image

And last but certainly not least the Pale Ale. I had it with a take away from Kin Khao. We tend to mix the yellow and red chicken curries because we’re crazy like that. It works! The Pale Ale is a good match for a spicy dish but it would also be great by itself. I’m not able to declare any of the three better than the others. They all stand up very well. Give them a try. They’re in Athlone, Longford and Dublin and they’ll soon be widely available.

Poachers and Pipers: A Pair of Pale Ales from Carrig

image

Carrig Brewing Company up in Carrick On Shannon recently launched two Pale Ales. You may ask why they’d double up like that, but there is method to their madness. The Pipers Pale Ale has hops from New Zealand. The hops are pleasingly citrussy and they are well balanced by some caramel malt. Decent beer.

image

Poachers Pale Ale on the other hand features ‘aromatic American hops’. I have to say I liked this one! It’s got some of that classic West Coast flavour. I am a bit curious as to what the respective hops are but it seems to be a secret. I’ll have to give the brewery a shout and ask in person! So for the weekend you should pick up a Poachers!

Bison’s Birthday Bash and a quick Beer in Brew Dock

Dublin’s Bison Bar celebrated their second birthday last night and Cathy the Manager was kind enough to invite me along. On entry you were given tokens which enititled you to a pint of Heineken or a Bourbon Lemonade. I was sat at a table with the Irish Beer Snob and Andrew Beoirfinder and our respective better halves so it was Bourbon Lemonade all round!

image

Prison Love provided a very suitable soundtrack for the evening, I noted that the washboard players nom de guerre was ‘Soapy’, which is fantastic! Oh and the grub? Well I have waxed lyrical about the barbecued treats on offer in Bison before, suffice to say we all left with our carnivorous needs satisfied for a few days! Thanks for having us along Cathy!

image

There was just time for a couple of beers before returning to the Midlands so four of us skipped up to The Brew Dock where we had some of their new Table Beer. It’s basically Of Foam and Fury’s little brother. It’s 3.5% and seriously quaffable, with enough grapefruitty hoppiness to satisfy any man or indeed, woman or lady!

image

And just to finish the night off in style I had one Of Foam and Fury. Not bad for a Wednesday night!
