Whelan’s for great music & beer?

image

I’ve had a few very memorable evenings in Whelan’s, Kurt Vile was playing his second of two sold out shows last night   and a posse of us headed in. This was my first visit since I started writing the blog. On our way in we passed Whelan’s Off Licence and a chalk board outside boasted about their selection of  a hundred and fifty craft beers. This bodes well I thought to myself. Alas my hopes were swiftly dashed when I got into the venue and had a look at choices at the bar.

The question was asked about the Irish craft beer just in case it was hidden away somewhere. Nope. I went with Budvar in the end. This beer claims to be the original or true Budweiser. That’s a can of worms I’m not going to open right now. Suffice to say it’s tastier than Budweiser, but then, most things are. All I want is good original live music and some decent craft beer. Is that too much to ask? Kurt Vile is a legend by the way!

New Kids On The Block: Independent Brewing Company

image

Galway’s Independent Brewing Company is a relative newcomer to the Irish craft beer scene. I don’t know how I haven’t had their beers until now, so many beers, so little time!  The Gold Ale won a silver medal in this years Dublin Beer Cup. It’s bright gold and has a decent head. It’s light and clean enough to make a refreshing summer beer. A good gateway or introductory craft beer.

I’m really starting to appreciate Red and Amber ales more at the moment so I have to say I enjoyed this Red Ale. It’s an Irish Red but I thought I could detect American influences. Sure enough the hops are from America and New Zealand with Magnum, Pacific Gem and Williamette working very well together. Of the two this is the one I’d really highly recommend. I picked up these in McCambridge’s in Galway.

German Beer comes to P Egan’s, Moate

image

Moate, my adopted home town is not known for it’s craft beer pubs. You can get a good pint of stout but that’s about it. Or that was it until a few days ago. I have been encouraging (they might say badgering) a couple of the more ‘progressive’ publicans to get in something different for a few months now. I was delighted to hear that P Egan’s had gotten Franziskaner Hefeweizen on draft. I can’t talk about the other publican because I’ve heard talk that he has filed for a restraining order or something similar.

The beer is a classic German wheat beer which has been brewed in Munich since the fourteenth century. I already liked this beer in bottles but the draft is a far superior animal altogether. It’s super fresh. The Rugby Official at the bar put me on the spot and asked what it was like, after a minute I replied that it tasted of bananas, cloves and had just a hint of bubblegum sweetness. Which is exactly what this style of beer is supposed to taste like. He had a pint and he must have liked it because he had another! My neighbour the Comic Geek was my drinking buddy for the evening and he makes no claims to be a beer geek but this beer won him over as well. I am happy to report that the Franziskaner tastes every bit as good as it does in the Munich Beer Halls. As the evenings start to get longer and Summer approaches I can see myself and some of my neighbours spending a fair bit of time drinking Franziskaner in Egan’s.

Into the wild west… beer by the sea

image

Yesterday was what we Irish like to call a ‘soft day’, slightly tongue in cheek, it means mild and wet. Sure what else would you be doing only going for a walk on the beach and bringing a picnic. The best part is that you have the whole beach to yourself, you can have fun if you are properly prepared.

image

After an hour or so of drawing in the sand, paddling in the shallow water and examining sea shells you’d have a bit of a hunger worked up. We had brought some home made tomato bisque (or soup depending on how posh you’re feeling) and some ham and cheese bread we’d picked up in a French style bakery along our way.

I also just happened to have a bottle of Scarlet Fever from the Wild Beer Company, a bottle opener and a sturdy plastic pint tumbler. It’s an American style amber ale. I don’t know if it’s fair to review it after a couple of hours of being sloshed around in the boot of the car but I only had one bottle. Naturally enough it had a huge head but that settled down nicely.  It smells very fruity and that carried through to the first sip. This was then cut by the hops. A very well put together beer and a great way to spend an afternoon.

*I’ve a funny feeling drinking outside is kind of illegal, so I’m not recommending you follow my example.
