Pints? In Athlone?? On a school night???

A few Athlone hostelries choose to close on a Tuesday. One publican I spoke with described it as a ‘dead loss’, I’d say it’s a common problem in Irish towns. I don’t have the answers, but I can tell you that it’s grand to go out for a few quiet sociable ones during the week. You’ve no bother getting served or finding a seat.

Even with pubs closed we still had plenty of watering holes to choose from. So myself and Dec The Barber called into Seery’s which opened on Lyster Street about two months ago. They don’t have any craft beer but they do have ‘a lovely pint of Guinness’ according to Dec. I had a bottle of Erdinger. I asked Tom, the proprietor about the six taps of lager on the bar and raised the issue of craft beer. He didn’t eject me from the premises anyway so we’ll see if there are any further developments there over the summer.

We then headed to Murphy’s Law which is only a very short walk away. I revisited a couple I’d had on the last beer club night, firstly the Kinnegar Rust Bucket and the Independent Pale Ale. Dec stuck with the stout.

As the sun set we found ourselves in Nut’s Corner. Where we both had pints of the black stuff. I didn’t bother asking Nut about craft beer as I suspect I’d get a very brief answer. Then it was time to head for the hills as both of us had duties the next morning.

    What is it about Tuesdays?

  2. That whole 10 taps on the bar and 6 of them are lagers thing never ceases to amaze me. What’s the point in having Heiniken, Carlsberg, Tuborg, Budwieser, Carling and fosters all on? It’s not actually giving any choice at all, they are all bland fizzy yellow weewee. Even if you took two of those out, whichever you have sitting there not selling, and put on something different, you;d atleast be trying to up your sales.
