I was asked recently about alternatives to a mainstream lager and after two or three I ran out of Irish Craft Beer options. There is a kind of snobbery about Lager with the majority of Irish breweries opting to brew Pale Ales instead. But as anyone who has dabbled in homebrewing knows it’s actually quite hard to brew a tasty lager. For this reason I was glad to see Mont Lager from Manor Brewing in the fridge in O’Brien’s. This beer brings to mind Sam Adams Boston Lager and Brooklyn Lager. I mean that as a compliment. Instead of pouring yellow, this is a warm amber colour. It has a dry crisp character from the noble hops used in the brew and a rich maltiness to back it up. Don’t write off lager, give this one a try. Master Brewer Fergal Murray formerly of Guinness is working with Manor Brewing so it will be interesting to see what they come up with next. You can visit the brewery tomorrow, they are drinking the place dry in aid of their current crowd funding drive. Find out more here:

A lot of craft breweries also don’t make lagers because it holds up tank space twice or three times as long. I am dismayed so many lagers are now coming out here in Vancouver Canada as its taking away from my seasonal ale love.
It’s a hard life! I’m sure you still have more beers to choose from than me!
Haha probabaly. There are over 100 breweries in the Province of British Columbia alone.
…and not all lagers are bad!
Oh very true. But usually when people talk of lagers even in the craft beer world they mean the American lager or pilsner. There are lots of great lagers like India Pale Lagers, bocks, dark lagers and the likes.
Did you ever try this lad? http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/285/776/
I have had many Doppelbock beers but never that one. Sounds tasty though to be sure.
It’s like a big chunk of rich heavy fruit cake…
