As uncharacteristic as it may seem I have been known to occasionally blow my own trumpet. So here’s the latest batch of homebrew from the Broderick brewhouse! I feel it only fair to own up to the fact that my wife (coincientally enough also an avid baker) does most of the actual work and also makes sure that I measure out the quantities correctly. So I eh, pick the kit (Coopers IPA and some extra malt) poured the water in and printed off the labels using the very handy www.beerlabelizer.com. I called the beer Old Joe’s as a nod to my father in law, his well water was used in the brew. I am unsure of the strength as there are some sums involved and anyway who cares, it looks like beer and tastes like beer! It has some head but that goes quickly enough, there is sufficient carbonation but I don’t think it’s hoppy enough. I may add extra hops to the next brew. Nevertheless I’m sure it will go down very well with the pork shoulder that’s marinading right now….
Oktoberfest in The Malt House
I had reasons to be cheerful last night and so went into The Malt House, Athlone. They are celebrating Oktoberfest all weekend and had just installed a tap for Schneider Weisse Blonde. When the gregarious barperson (I’m not sure if the term barmaid is PC anymore!) placed the stein in front of me I was immediately transported to a German beerhall! The beer has a fluffy white head and a honey and clove aroma. It’s almost too easy to drink and has a very pleasant aftertaste. If you haven’t yet celebrated Oktoberfest then make it your duty to head in to The Malt House over the next three days!
No Bull!
I was recently lucky enough to get to pay a visit to the Bull & Castle Beerhall in Dublin. In a seamless transition from my most last post I began the evening with a beer from Trouble Brewing. They have a seasonal special called Pumpkin Brew on draft which unsurprisingly enough has real pumpkin in it! The pumpkin is enhanced by the hints of ginger and nutmeg. I found it sweet but not sickly, a very enjoyable pint.
The excellent bar man recommended Waterford brewery Metalman’s Moonbeam which was on cask for my next tipple. It’s a dark beer with Nugget and Pacific Gem hops. They were not overpowering and overall I found it quite a smooth beer.
Last but by no means least I had a Founder’s All Day IPA. I have read several rave reviews about this beer from Michigan and they weren’t wrong. My friend the digital marketing expert put it very well when he described it: ‘refreshing like an ice tea, some peach and citrus’, of course it being an IPA there were some hops for good measure! I hadn’t been in the Bull & Castle in years and I have to say it’s definitely worth revisiting!
Number 1 with a bullet
Last night I had the pleasure of visiting Number 1 in Mullingar which boasts not only your usual suspects on draft but also some Irish craft beers and em, Blue Moon. First up I had a Bo Bristle which as I have mentioned before is brewed in Banagher, Co. Offaly. I really enjoyed this beer the first time I had it but it seemed a little insipid last night for some reason. Then I had a bottle of St Austell’s Proper Job which is a very drinkable IPA. I saved the best til last though and finished the night off with Trouble Brewing’s Or Golden Ale. (There should be a fada on top of the ‘O’)
The glass bears the legend ‘Spare a thought for all of those who wish they were holding this glass right now.’ This is a beautifully balanced Ale which would be great for a session. The reason for my visit was a show by Duke Special who was on the final night of his tour playing the songs of Harry Nilsson. As a special treat myself and my friends were asked to accompany him on percussion for ‘Coconut’, a song you may remember from the Reservoir Dogs Soundtrack. And we didn’t ruin it! So if you’re out in Mullingar head in to Number 1 for some Or and maybe a few tunes!
Breakfast and dinner at once!
Mikkeller is a brewer without a brewery, so he uses other’s facilities. This evening I tried his Breakfast Oatmeal Stout with Coffee which was brewed in Norway. I had it with steak and kidney pie and it was a little over powering to be honest. A beer this complex deserves to be drank on it’s own. There are bitter dark chocolate flavours mixed in with the coffee. I did think it would be creamier due to the oatmeal. Nevertheless a fine beer.
