Little Beer that could kill & my home made light box

image

London’s Weird Beard has brought the world a series of sessionable IPAs called Little Things That Kill. Each batch features different hops. This one was from the fourth batch and it’s packing Chinook and Amarillo. The label is frankly, threatening, and I was shaken after reading it. I steeled myself anyway and got stuck in. Phowar there’s a whole lot of hoppy flavour in it for a 3.9% beer! Worth picking up if you can find it, I’m sure subsequent batches will be equally kick ass!

I mentioned before that I had been made a light box by my multi talented wife for Father’s Day. Here it is now with two lamps! I love it, and she’s pretty chuffed with herself too!

Yin and Yang Black and Tan – Beer Mash Up

image

Some of you may be familiar with the tradition of layering stout on top of ale to create a drink known as a black and tan. For many years I’d say Irish drinkers were limited to Guinness on top of Smithwicks. Mikkeller’s Yin and Yang puts a whole new spin on the idea. Yang is an Imperial Taiji India Pale Ale and Yin is an Imperial Taiji Stout. I have read that Taiji is just something they made up but a quick check of the always reliable Wikipedia tells me that it’s the set of Chinese beliefs often represented by the Yin and Yang symbols.

I had to try the two beers on their own before mixing them, well I didn’t HAVE to, I wanted to! The Yang is an impeccable Imperial IPA. It’s a beautiful amber colour and it’s properly bitter.

Yin is an exceptional Imperial Stout. It’s got roasted mocha type flavours. Gorgeous. I’m just worried about running out of superlatives at this point.

The layering didn’t work out despite the careful pouring of my wife over the back of a spoon. No matter. It still tasted amazing. The good and evil, dark and light, malty sweetness and hoppy bitterness form a uniquely satisfying whole. You really have to try it for yourself. I fear I’m now ruined for other Black and Tans.

Fizzy? Yes! Yellow? Yes! Piss? No!

Are you looking for a great Summer thirst quencher? Check out Augustiner’s Lagerbier Hell! I had it on tap on my last visit to Munich but sadly did it the wrong way round and had it after their Dunkel and Weisse. It’s available in bottles in Ireland and it’s a shining example of what a lager should be.

Thornbridge’s strike gold once again with their Twin Peaks Anglo American Pale Ale. This was brewed with hops supplied by the nice people of Sierra Nevada. It’s a really excellent Pale Ale, seek it out.

Ps: I really enjoyed the responses about yesterday’s Beer Snacks post.
Pork Pies from English Man Simon.
White Cheddar Popcorn from Phirx Nashville.
Weissewurst, Obzata, Radi, Pressack and Leberkas from Nico the Bavarian.
And Pizza from Cork Man Dave ‘Stout and Ale’ O’Driscoll!

What’s your favourite beer snack?

image

I was munching on these super healthy pretzel pieces last night and they started me off reminiscing about the pretzel with cheese and sausage I had in The Flying Saucer, Memphis. Obviously anything pork related is always a win with beer and you can never go far wrong with chicken wings! Tell me what’s your favourite, let’s see if we can share some new snack ideas!
